Abstract
PRODUCTION OF UF4 TO URANIUM METAL REDUCTION PROCESS OF CALSIOTHERMIC METHOD. The calsiothermic reduction method is selected in order to manufacture uranium metal to get the product that meets the specifications of nuclear fuel. Experiments conducted by mixing metal powder UF4 with pure granular Ca (grain size diameter +2mm = 40%, and +2 -6mm = 60%), each as much as 6800g and 2180g (25%Ca metal excesses of stoichiometry). UF4 and Ca incorporated into the graphite tube, then transferred into the steel tube to be heated inside the furnace reduction. Reduction furnace is heated and held at a temperature of 600oC for 15 minutes, then lowered to 400oC to do ignition. The result of the reduction consist of two layers of U metal of the bottom of the cup furnace reduction, while CaF2 slag layer on top. The uranium metal has a purity of 99.97%, density of 19.070g/cm3, impurities constituent metals elements (<specification Nukem) and from X-Ray diffraction test of uranium is dominated by the structure of the alpha-U 96.42% mixed with 3.58% UO2. The uranium quality of experimental results to specification uranium metal of Tessag Nukem Nuclear GmbH, but the quality could be improved by changing the process parameters.
